Good Reading
Well I have been really enjoying Malcolm Gladwell's book Blink the power of thinking without thinking. Its a fascinating book about rapid cognition. It talks about how we interpret hidden clues to make fast decisions. Its a great book. I like it so much that I bought his other book the Tipping Point. The book is a lot like Thomas L Friedman's The World is Flat and Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt which are my favorite books.

Which MMA fighter are you?
Wanderlei Silva
I scored 44% Sprawl n Brawl, 39% Lock n Choke, 66% Ground n Pound, and 29% Lay n Pray!

I am the Axe Murderer, you like to brawl it out or stomp on your opponent's head relentlessly. On the ground you prefer pounding on your opponent over submitting him technically. However, you tend to be defensive on the ground.

Scientific analysis of the paranormal
This is a pretty interesting scientific analysis of the posibility of the paranormal utilizing laws of science, mostly physics to explain how most conceptions of the paranormal are completely impossible. Costas Efthimiou a professor at University of Central Florida was concerned about surveys showing that most people are gullible about the supernatural. His paper even tackled the posibility of vampires and his claculations figured out if the first vampire had attacked on January 1, 1600 there would be no humans left by June of 1602. He also tackles zombies and provides a logical explanation for them. Check it out!

Pride Real Deal
The Real Deal was Pride's first US soiled shoow and while I was impressed there was one thing that ran through my mind the whole show. Id like it better if it were in Japan. Fighting under NSAC rules didnt really impact any of the fights like I worried. The production was big like all Pride shows, notice i didnt use better. I am prefectly happy splitting my MMA adoration between two companies as I am sure most OG MMA fans are. Pride and UFC are different. I like them both that way. Sure it was nice to see Pride live but I'd be happier if they didnt edit there Japan shows so much and made them look live. It sounds as though Pride is going to be back in February and Wanderlei will be fighting on the card. Hopefully against Chuck but I doubt the UFC will let it happen.

Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI
I know that most people arent fans of Diesels because of the negative stereotype attached to them as loud, stinky, gutless, etc. But honestly the old diesel has done a 360 in the past couple of years. The newer diesels are surprisingly fuel efficient consuming up to 30% less than conventional engines. The 5 liter V10 gets 17 city 23 highway mpg. That on top of the fact that it would meet the strictest environmental standards meet the new ultra-low particulate emissions standards by using ultra-low sulfur fuel and you have an all around winner here. Its pricey going at at around 70k but it seems to give the best all around combination of performance, economy, and all the while being good for the environment. It also has all the luxury bells and whistles so check it out. You cant build one yet on vw.com but you can check it out on Autoblog

The Red Campaign
As I watch the new Red Campaign I sit back and wonder why we didnt try these kinds of far reaching campaigns before. I am guessing that Lance Armstrong's Wear Yellow started all of this corporate awareness. I bought one of those original yellow wristbands and honestly I am wearing my third now. I also wear my Aldo Empowerment Tags which generates funds to fight youth aids and awareness through the product itslef. While I know these things are trendy they also support great causes so you feel better about them.

Xbox 360 Woes
Well the guys at Gamestop took care of my Xbox woes when the replaced my console yesterday. I had a bad reader and they hooked me up. I have been having a blast with Saints Row and MotoGP 06. I picked up Madden 07 yesterday though honestly I am not that impressed so far. Its been an interesting week for tech support woes this week. First I call Xbox for support and then the console started working so the guy has ne keep my ticket number. Call back Friday night and get someone whose obviously off shore. She runs me through every hoop in the book and the says yeah it's the reader but I need you to call back in two days when our system is back up so we can file your issue and send out the shipping package. Two days? Yeah then she tells me she going to give me a tracking number and cant even do that. This after the person at Symantec who refunded my subscription rather than send me a link to download their software. Ph well at least they gave me my money back and niw Im using someone else. I thought companies were becoming aware that bad customer service was going to kill them?

UFC 64
Well what can I say I enjoyed last nights fights though I was a little surprised at the outcome of Rich Franklin vrs Anderson Silva. Not so much because Anderson won as because he was so dominant in his win. Rich even said after the fight that he was surprised at how strong Silva was in the Thai clinch and it showed. They had some nice exchanges and it lloked like Franklin was holding his own with Silva until Silva Slapped the arms around hid head and kneed him into defeat. Franklins nose was a sight I would have rather not seen as it was pointing southwest after Silva was done. In the other championship bout of the night Sean Sherk avoided any surprises looking like Matt Hughes as he rolled over a very game Kenny Florian in a 5 round ground and pound clinic. I really think Sherk is going to be as dominant if not more than Matt Hughes is at 170. Cheik Kongo showed the serious holes in his game as he was grounded and pounded for three straight rounds by Carmelo Marrero in the nights yawner fight. Hopefully this will notivate Cheik to go back and complete his game. John Fitch Proved to be very game in his win over Kuniyoshi Hironaka who is well known for his ground game. Spencer Fischer won a morale boosting victory over Dan Lauzon, whose brother Joe surprised Jens Pulver last UFC by knockout, for MFS. The only undercard bout that was shown was Clay Guoda's ground and pound victory over Justin James. I was glas to see Guida fight since I had heard a lot about him in his winning and losing of his Strikeforce Lightweight Championship. It was a good show overall though Directv or UFC had issues with the broadcast which had no picture at the begining of the show.

Nicolay Valuev
Now I am not a huge fan of boxing because my of my MMA preferences but Nicolay Valuev is a 7 foot 330 pound WBA Heavyweight champion who is four fights from tying Rocky Marciano's record of 49-0. I am sorta of surprised we havent heard more about this guy especially considering his size. Apparently the boxing writers dont feel he is as good as his record implies, which makes me wonder how he got the belt?

UFC Fight Night Ortiz vrs Shamrock
Well I only caught the last two fights but they were two I really wanted to see. I would have also liked to have caught Matt Hammil but hey got to see Tito take out Ken much like he did last time they faced off and Kendall Grove took out undefeated Chris Price at UFC Fight Night. The production seemed different this time but it seemed to be fine. Another note of interest about the show, according to Graciemag.com the ratings for this show were better that they were for the MLB playoffs!

Looking forward to UFC 64 on Saturday where Rich Franklin will defend his 185 pound belt against Anderson Silva and Kenny Florian takes on Sean Sherk for the 155 title. The card also features John Fitch the highly regarded 170 pounder from MFS, Cheick Kongo who has been generating some excitement at Heavyweight and the always exciting lightweight Spencer Fischer also from MFS. Theres not much exciting on the undercard at least as I see it now. I am curious to see Clay Guida fight though I doubt we will get a chance to see that one on the PPV. Should be a decent card and I am most happy thay we should have a 155 pound champ again after this card.

Modern Army Combatives and High Gear
I thought I had talked about Modern Army Combatives but must have drifted off before finishing the post. Basically Modern Combatives was developed through the Rangers as a basic hand to hand combat platform that would be easy to train and incorporate into regular training. It includes concepts from Jiu Jitsu for ground Game, Judo and Wrestling for Take Downs and Boxing and Muay Thai for standup techniques. It has been since passed on to the Army as genmeral training that every soldier gets. Part of their training is live practice using High Gear which allows you the flexibility and protection for real world training without the injury.

The gear is fascinating because it is a combination of other protective gears combined to make a full suit that protects you from head to toe. Its not cheap running about $1050.00 for a full suit but the impact for real world training is awesome. They even make a model that works with Simunition so you can incorporate live firearms to the mix as well.
