The Joe Schmo Show
Well Last night was the last episode of the Joe Schmo Show and they finally broke it to Matt Kennedy Gould that they had been yanking his chain for however long he had been in the house. If you dont know the concept of the show, basically they told this guy that he was going on a reality show and then had a bunch of actors script out the way the reality show went on around him. This inclyded the challenges, the personalities, the powerplays, everything basically scripted ahead of the shows path, Obviously a lot of it was done on the fly as any human can be unpredictable as this guy certainly was. Last night in the final voting ceremony, where they brought back all of the ousted cast, they voted the asshole champ of the game and then fained that they had a huge problem. The problem was that someone wasnt who they claimed to be, da, da, da. That was when they came clean about being actors.
I wasn't a real avid watcher of this show. I had watched the first episode because Ralph of the Kevin and Bean Show was on it. It wasn't that there was no interest so much as there wasn't any time that I caught the show. Finally on Saturday I saw a marathon and caught up to speed and hope they try to pull this off again.

Dream phone setup
I know that I have talked about the Nextel Blackberry 6510 being the best pda/cell phone combo for the strengths of the two platforms. As i read up on the product on pda street I noticed that someone had posted an entry about Sonic Admin which is a software platform which allows IT staff to administrate their servers from the blackberry device. I had heard of the product prior but didn't realise how powerful it was. The Sonic Admin Demo explains all of the features of the product including user administration as well as server administration. This truly makes the Nextel Blackberry 6510 a potent tool for any IS dept. Essentially one wouldn't have to be chained to their desk to do most functions. I even think we would be able to administrate our as400 using the sonic admin package.

Wireless Local Number Portability
I was checking out Cingular's site the other day when I noited Wireless Local Number Portability page which has lot of information on getting your number transfered from one carrier to another. I am not sure if it is avaiklable in all areas but I would imagine it would be. The rules dont look particularly detailed.

W32.Welchia.Worm
Well life at work has been sucking today. We were infected with the W32.Welchia.Worm which infected the majority of our computers and servers. It looks like we finally cleaned up one hospital after 16 hours and are headed on to the other hospital to clean it up. Looks to be at least another few hours before we get it all together. Sleep deprivation is a major component of working in IS. This afternoon I get to take the kids to Mulligans for Marianna's birthday so I should be real chipper by then.

I remeber the big deal associated with Pilots becoming armed to defend cockpits from terrorist attack and thinking really it was a good idea. I am still in agreement with the policy as I think it provides a strong means of defense to prevent situations that could lead to a repeat of 9/11. What I didn't realise was how significant the program was and what it encompassed. I believed the program was going to just certify pilots in airplane security and shooting tactics. In reality it makes them federal officers for the purpose of protecting the flight decks of aircrafts. That is a huge difference. Some of the key points that I saw were;
*A pilot's employing air carrier will be allowed to offer input into the selection process but TSA will decide whether a pilot is qualified (i.e. air carriers do not have a "veto").
*FFDOs will be Federal law enforcement officers only for the limited purposes of carrying firearms and using force to defend the flight deck of an aircraft from air piracy or criminal violence including lethal force.
* FFDOs may transport secured firearms in any state and to any state to or from a flight on which they will be the pilot in command or second in command or to or from activities approved by TSA as necessary for participation in the program.
*A Federal flight deck officer shall not be liable for damages in any action brought in a Federal or State court arising out of acts or omissions of the officer defending the flight deck of an aircraft against acts of criminal violence or air piracy unless the officer is guilty of gross negligence or willful misconduct.
In other words these FFDO's can get certified or deputised whether there employer wants them to or not. I.E. United does not want any of its pilots to be FFDO's but the TSA says they cannot prevent it. Also the fact that FFDO's have protected status against lawsuits in the enactment of their duties is also huge. Imagine your on a flight with a man who is clinically insane who rushes the cockpit out of paranoia. The pilot defens the cockpit by shooting at him, misses and shoots out a window causing the plane to go down. No liability, he was working in the definition of his responsibility as a federal officer. Now I realise that this whole scenario is a reach. Just though tit might be interesting. Overall I think the program is right and correct in the way it is being applied, I am just a little surprised the federal government had the cojones to put it in place the way they have. Click on the more button below to see the actual specs from the TSA site.
The Perfect Heart
One day a young man was standing in the middle of the town proclaiming that he had the most beautiful heart in the whole valley. A large crowd gathered and they all admired his heart for it was perfect. There was not a mark or a flaw in it. Yes, they all agreed it truly was the most beautiful heart they had ever seen. The young man was very proud and boasted more loudly about his beautiful heart.
Suddenly, an old man appeared at the front of the crowd and said, "Why your heart is not nearly as beautiful as mine." The crowd and the young man looked at the old man's heart. It was beating strongly, but full of scars, it had places where pieces had been removed and other pieces put in, but they didn't fit quite right and there were several jagged edges. In fact, in some places there were deep gouges where whole pieces were missing. The people stared -- how could he say his heart is more beautiful, they thought?
The young man looked at the old man's heart and saw its state and laughed. "You must be joking," he said. "Compare your heart with mine, mine is perfect and yours is a mess of scars and tears." "Yes," said the old man, "yours is perfect looking but I would never trade with you. You see, every scar represents a person to whom I have given my love - I tear out a piece of my heart and give it to them, and often they give me a piece of their heart which fits into the empty place in my heart, but because the pieces aren't exact, I have some rough edges, which I cherish, because they remind me of the love we shared.
Sometimes I have given pieces of my heart away, and the other person hasn't returned a piece of his heart to me. These are the empty gouges -- giving love is taking a chance. Although these gouges are painful, they stay open, reminding me of the love I have for these people too, and I hope someday they may return and fill the space I have waiting. So now do you see what true beauty is?"
The young man stood silently with tears running down his cheeks. He walked up to the old man, reached into his perfect young and beautiful heart, and ripped a piece out. He offered it to the old man with trembling hands. The old man took his offering, placed it in his heart and then took a piece from his old scarred heart and placed it in the wound in the young man's heart. It fit, but not perfectly, as there were some jagged edges. The young man looked at his heart, not perfect anymore but more beautiful than ever, since love from the old man's heart flowed into his. They embraced and walked away side by side.
Well I am going to start Atkins this Monday. I have heard all of the knocks on how it will cause my cholestorol to shoot up and all of the other complaints about the diet but I have also read Atkins book, or at least most of it and his theories seem to make a lot of sense. You might ask why wait then, but as I have been reading about the diet Atkins suggested that you set a date and prepare for it as there are some huge lifestyle changes to be made. A huge one for me will be giving up caffeine during the induction phase and hopefully forever. I had success with the White and Day diet, which White and Day state they had nothing to do with, which was essentially Atkins with Grapefruit juice losing a fair amount of weight. Hopefully I will be as successful on Atkins allthough as I read it going Atkins is more like someone who has decided to become a vegetarian in that once you chose the lifestyle change it is indeed that a lifestyle change you should try to stick with for life.

Baseball
Well Baseball was delivered a second decisive blow yesterday when the redsox were beat by the Yankees. Sure the world series will go on and some team, yankees or marlins will be champion. However the hope of having the redsox face the cubs and killing two curses at one time were dashed again this year. Im not the biggest baseball fan but I would have watched boston versus chicago every night. Oh well another year down the drain. It will be hard to get my attention again for this series as neither the yankees or the marlins peak my interest. Its okay as I have football, hockey and basketball to fall back on.

Weekend Update
Well I am back from Boston. Friday night we went up to Salem which is infamous for the witch trials. They are in full bore ahead since it is Halloween time which is apparently there busiest time of year. While we were up there i checked out the salem wax museum and a haunted house. On Saturday morning we went to Cape Cod and checked out the JFK memorial and a lighthouse. Since we were tight on time we didn't get to see as much of the cape as I would have liked but hey it was a business trip. I flew back on Saturday evening and was lucky enough to get on a non-stop rather than the hop through Chicago I was scheduled for so I got back at 9:30 rather than 11:30. On Sunday I took my wife and In laws to Harrahs near Escondido for a little gambling. It was like a two hour drive which isn't as bad as Vegas but no matter what they tell you even though the one casino has vegas gaming it doesn't have thirty other casinos worth of stuff for you to go do as well. If your just going to go to Vegas for the gaming then check one of the indian casinos out they have almost the same environment in them but if you are looking for a weekend at Vegas go to Vegas. There is no replacement.

Meditech Training Day 2
Well it has been another fun day at the old Meditech Facility in Canton. I cant get over how pretty it is here. Took some photos of the grounds today. The trip has been far better than I thought because I understand some of the behind the scene processes better than I did before. The further I get into training theough the bigger of a job this appears to be. Hopefully I will get away with just managing the process and not have to build any of the dictionaries. Anyways we are almost done for the day and hopefully I will get back into Boston to see some sights again.

Boston Trip
Well its been a ratther interesting evening in Boston. We took the train into the city today inhoopes of seeing the Freedom trail. We actually made it to the beginning of the trail but it was too late and since the second stop on the trail was closed so we changed plans and went to the bar where the outside of cheers is from. Just shows you the significance of hisstory in this group. Actually we'll give the trail another shot maybe tomorrow or Friday. We went to Hard Rock Cafe for dinner which was really good and I got a commemorative pint beer glass and a couple of pins for the girls. Tonight Im using the internet serrvice in my room which is really crappy, probably becaause it is on a tv in the first place and costs an arm and a lleg to boot. Oh well the pain of being connected I guess. The hotel advertised having high speed connections in the rooms but the only thing in my room was a phone line. Anyway I need to get back to the grind..

Meditech Training
Well Im in Boston and made it to my first days training. The Hotel we are staying at is a Holiday Inn at Randolph which is nicely appointed and close to everything. The Meditech training is on a beautiful old farm and is refered to as the Canton Facility. The building is beautiful inside and out. This must be an awesome company to work for!

Legal Seafood
Last night I ate at an awesome resturant in Boston called Legal Seafood. It was really a nice restaurant with two of the nicest aquariums I have ever seen. The food was good as I had some clam chowder and infamous crab cakes that the northeast is so famous for. The ambience was similar to what I saq in PF Changs back home with a lively environment with somewhat dim lighting.

My first Business Trip
Well Im making my first business trip today to Boston for Meditech Training. Im sitting the airport now amazed that they can still manage to get as many people as they do through the turnstyles with all the caution thwey used before they let me on the plane. They swabbed my laptop for explosives aven which I thought was pretty cool. Now don't get me wrong I wholheartedly approve of the security I am just amazed at how everyone seems to be able to travel at the same pace as prior to 9-11. Let me also say that the internet kiosks at LAX are awesome as well. I love being able to get on the net quickly and take care of stuff real quick.

Atkins Diet
I have been reading up on the Atkin's Diet in hopes of dropping weight. All of my family and friends are concerned about my weight as I am 5'5 and weigh 215 pounds. I had tried a similar diet and lost weight but it was a diet and after I stopped I went back to my old habits and gained my weight back. Atkins is more of a lifestyle than a diet and while Atkins has focused on Carbs he actually is really battling Processed foods. As I read more and more it seems to make better and better sense. We will see when start induction I'll let you now how it goes.
