My Weekend
I had a blast of a weekend. Went up to Richmond to pick up my girls who ad been staying with their aunt. I took Friday off so we drove out Thursday and Trafic wasn't bad. On Friday we went to San Pablo Reservoir and I tootk the girls out for an hour on a dinghy with an outboard. Friday night we watched the most recent Harold and Kumar movie. Saturday I went to the Cal / Michigan State game at Memorial Stadium. The seats were great right on the 50 yard line about 20 rows up. The game was great and though Cal led the entire game MSU kept it close and still had a chance up until the last minute. Cal looks like they have a different swagger this year and could do some good things. We are going to drive back down to San Pedro today so we cna take it easy tomorrow.

NBC Olympics
I know this might be a little premature since I haven't seen the closing ceremonies but I don't recall being as involved in an Olympics since they were in Los Angeles, boy a, I dating myself with that statement. Everyone expected Phelps to be a huge star but who would have expected Usain Bolt to be such a star, really he stole much of the thunder Phelps generated but in hindsight he just became the focus after Phelps completed swim to history. Gymnastics was captivating as well though the games got a black eye with the probability that China had underaged gymnasts performing but really I feel like the age limit is a little ridiculous anyways. Beach Volleyball was great though I guess much like basketball we would have been disappointed if they hadn't won. I have to admit though I didn't miss a beach volleyball game...
The one surprise in basketball was what great olympians our NBA stars turned out to be. They attended many of the other sports events, they did a lot of very public site seeing and they performed as a team. When I say a team I mean a team like when they only allowed college players on the squad. Mens water polo was a pleasant surprise as they managed to take the silver when there was some question if they would survive the pool play no pun intended. Mens and women's indoor volleyball were both great as the mens team took the Gold and the women the Silver after suffering a devastating blow with the murder at the beginning of the games.
Im really looking forward to seeing the closing ceremony tonight but at the same time it is kind of bittersweet as this year China brought back the spirit of the olympics.

2009 Honda Fit
Looks like Honda caught on to its own lil gem as it has done some redesigning of the 2009 Honda Fit Basically after selling 2 million worldwide it was hard for them to miss. Honda increaed the wheelbase 2 inches to accomodate what it calls magic seats which can be configured in a variety of ways based on your storage needs. Owners now have the option of FWD and AWD in 2009 and transmission options include a 5 speed manual, a 5 speed automatic with included paddle shifters =) I like me some paddle shifters. The Fit Sport looks like the model to have with an aero kit and 16 inch wheels and an option of voice controlled Navi system which tops out $17,910. Video Link of the 2009 Honda Fit

Stars Galore at the IBJJF Had a blast at IBJJF only bothered Joe and Hermes because they were in line for Sylvio's BBQ in front of me and I figured two guys who fought for the 155 pound title together I couldn't pass on. Also saw Uriah Faber in the morning. I think I might start training again these guys really make me look fat....

IBJJF No Gi World Championships
Well I am going to go to the no gi worlds today! They are being held at my alma mater CSUDH and they have some great fighters on the bill including many from MMA. Fabio Leopoldo, Hermes Franca, Joe Stevenson, Jeff Monson, Wander Braga, and grappling well knowns Paulo Guillobel, William Cooper, and Jeff Glover are all scheduled to grapple. Wonder if any of the guys from the UFC last night will make it down today?

UFC 87
Well normally I am a little disappointed by a fight card that has one prelim match shown on the pay per view but not tonight. Every fight was solid and entertaining. Demian Maia proved he was the real deal in a back and forth battle with Jason MacDonald. Maia finally was able to muster a submission in the 3rd round by rear naled choke. This was one of those ground fights even the drunken fans couldn't boo. It was back and forth chess at its finest. The next bout Kenny Florian proved he is still one of the most cerebral fighters at 155 and still a big dog of the division as he used a very technical fighting style to keep phenom Roger Huerta under control and at bay for a unanimous decision. Its going to be interesting to see what they do with him while it looks like BJ will face GSP at 170. Cheick Kongo looks more and more like a real mma fighter and he used a broader cross section of his skills in securing a first round knockout of Dan Evensen. Rob Emerson caught a flailing Manny Gamburian with a viscious knockout to end the fight at 12 seconds. Apparently Rob sees the same previews where Manny said he was going to chrge in and developed an answer for it. In the co main event Brock Lesnar proved he is going to be a fighter to contend with as he took a rather dominant victory over veteran Heath Herring by unanimous decision. Lesnars experience of getting caught in a Frank Mir kneebar last time out taught him a patience he showed through most of the fight and n the end Herring looked like he had been fighting a locomotive. In the main event GSP showed why he is so high in the pound for pound rankings as he dominated John Fitch to the tone of a 50-43 decision which means the judges decided 2 of the rounds were ultra dominant 10-8 rounds. After the decision GSP said he would be interested in taking on on 155 pound champ BJ Penn which considering Penn made his way to the ring looks like it might be the path the UFC takes. As for Roger Huerta I worry about where he is headed as he started to make waves publicly about how the UFC was paying him for appearances and then got manhandled. I hope he works things out and patches things up with the UFC though I imagine that now that his shiny toy is blemished Dana White might throw it away, hopefully the little bit of damage control Roger seemed to be doing this week will mend things enough to keep him around.

Next Affliction Card shaping up
Well the new promotion which strikes me as the Pride for the US Crowd better known as Affliction has been very busy scooping up IFL's free agents like Roy Nelson, Vladamir Matyushenko, and Chris Horodecki, though apparently haven't signed Tito Ortiz as of yet. Fights confirmed for the October 11th card include Andrei Arlovski vrs. Josh Barnett, Matt Lindland vrs. Vitor Belfort, and Roy Nelson vrs. Paul Buentello. Apparently the winner of Arlovski and Barnett gets a shot at Emelianenko but honestly I wonder if Emelianenko is hoping that Couture might be cleared in time for an October face off? Either way this is shaping up to be a strong card and hopefully a strong promotion.

WEC 35
I have been a huge fan of the WEC since its first card. I think their emphasis on the little guys makes the product that much better, and boy do their cards end up being exciting. That said I was a little disappointed with yesterdays card not to say it wasnt great overall but it was a letdown compared to recent ones they have had. We got to see Brock Larson return to form rolling through Carlo Prater in 37 seconds in his bull in a china shop fashion. Larson is a beast at 170 and Carlos Condit is the only guy who has withstood his aggression in recent memory. John Grispi was able to take out Micah Miller in quick fashion getting the tko in 50 seconds. Brian Bowles kept his hot streak alive beating Demacio Page in the first round as well. Im wondering how long they will keep hima way from champ Miguel Torres as he has rolled through three solid opponents in quick fashion. Jamie Varner defended his 155 pound title against Marcus Hicks by TKO in the first round. Steve Cantwell avenged a previous loss to Brian Stann and took the 205 pound title as well. In the main event Carlos Condit survived a mauling at the hands of Hiromitsu Miura. Miura used his judo to get some spectacular takedowns on the Champ but Condit was so well rounded he either would stand up and take the rounds or he would be the aggressor on the ground. I was truly worried for Condit in the late third early fourth but finally Miura gassed and Condit toook advantage with a knee that brought Miura down to the mat and Condit pressured until the ref stopped the fight. It was a great back and forth fight and for the most part was a solid card.
