Jiu Jitsu War Wounds and other stuff!
08-30-06_2358 (17k image)
Had a great time at jiu jitsu tonight and got to roll a couple of times with some good guys butmanaged to get a really good gi burn. It didnt and doesnt hurt but my wife was pretty annoyed as she is always worrying about me getting hurt.

On a side not the best damn after jiu jitsu snack is a naked juice and a big bottle of Fiji water. Now Im not a big bottled water snob but if I had my choice I would drink fiji all the time. I found out that by definition, artesian water comes from a source deep within the earth, protected by layers of clay and rock. There is no opening, not even a porthole to the surface. As a result, the water never comes into contact with the air, protecting it from environmental pollutants and other contamination.

New Laptop
Got a new laptop for work. Its a dell Inspiron 640m and so far I like it. Its much easier to work on than my old inspiron and has all the latest bells and whistles. I'll let you know how it turns out in the end. I have been getting evrything installed on it and am still trying to figure out my blackberry software though it also seems to be working solidly as well. Definitely need to buy a bluetooth for this phone, I somehow managed to lose my old headset.

UFC 62
Well it was another bust weekend for MMA fans as both the UFC and Pride Bushido had shows this weekend. The UFC event was a strong one. Chuck Liddell successfully defended his belt against Renato Sobral. Forrest Griffin won a decision over Stephan Bonnar in a match much like their first meeting. Nick Diaz showed his toughness in defeating Josh Neer. Cheick Kongo looks like the real deal at Heavyweight as he won over Christian Wellisch and Hermes Franca started slow but finished strong submitting Jamie Varner. The two undercard bouts we got to see Wilson Gouveia submitted Wes Combs with a rear naked choke and Eric Schafer beat Rob MacDonald with a triangle arm bar. It was a great card and I found out that Matt Hughes wont be facing George St Pierre but rather will ba facing Bj Penn die to St Pierres injury.

BJJ Camp
I was watching the DVD Arte Suave which is about the BJJ lifestyle in Brazil and how a lot of the top fighters train and all about their gyms. One of the stops was BJJ camp which is located in a large house right on the beach. I was admiring the beauty of it all and daydreaming about it imagining it has to cost an arm and a leg. Well I was checking out Jacare's web site when I saw a link for BJJ Camp and I'll be damned if it only costs $120.00 a day and the accommodations, five meals a day, transportation from the airport and back and all the classes are included. Im gonna star saving my pennies now. $1200 plus airfare and I am done what more could you ask for than to train with the best in paradise and not spend an arm and a leg!

My First Vacuum Cup
Well we had our first gym vacuum cup last night. Basically its a tournament in reverse. If you lose you keep on going until finally there is a guy who hasnt won at all. That guy earns the honor of cleaning the gym. I was a little worried because I have never actually competed and wasnt sure what it would be like but I had fun. I fought my brother first and he tapped me by triangle pretty quickly, no big surprise there he's a purple belt and has tons of exoperience. My secound bout was against a guy who is greener than me but he's 17 the only good thing was he was on his third bout when we met up for the old vacuum cup final, definitel not where you want to be but fortunately I was able to out point him and avoid taking home the cup and the chores that go along with it.

IGJJF World Championships
The International Gracie Jiu Jitsu Federation World Championships were held this weekend in Torrance, CA at El Camino College. Saturday which I couldnt attend was the white and purple belts plus the kids and female competitors. I did get to make it Sunday and seeing how this was my first tournament I was sucking up the environment. Unfortunately I dont know most of the guys by sight like my brother does but I had a good time anyways. Some of the better matches came from some of my favorites including Javier Vasquez and Jeff Glover who faced off in the black belt division and Bill Cooper who did well in the brown belt division until he ran into Chris Moriarty who tapped him with a knee crank. I had a blast and took lots of photos. Ate some awesome Brazilian BBQ from Silvios. Waiting for the final results to be posted but there is a report on OnTheMat.com. All in all it was a pretty interesting day and I had a good time.

UFC Fight Night and TUF 4
Well it was a great night for me as the UFC Fight Night was a great show. The main event between Diego Sanchez and Karo Parisian was awesome and Diego really proved himself a top tier guy by taking out Karo. Dean Lister showed his submissions wqere still enough to keep him in the win column against a tough Yuki Sasaki. Josh Koscheck is starting show some of his true potential as he easily rolled through Johnathon Goulet showing strong strikes and some submission skills. Chris Leben returned to winning form as he took out a very game Jorge Rivera by KO in the second round.

TUF 4 which is a little different as it was all vets trying to win 100k and a title shot int heir respective divisions. The fact that these are vets makes it far more entertaining. These guys really want to be there and win. Definitely should cut down on Dana White's quantities of F bombs. Also I think it eliminates the beef that no name guys through tuf were getting the promotional push.

Tonight was a welterweight matchup with the Shonie Carter taking on Rich Clementi. Rich picked Shonie I believe much as young lions do that he could take out the old guy. Well Shonie had an ace up his sleeve in Matt Serra, who really wanted to fight Shonie coming into the show after a bitter defeat Shonie pulled out in the end in UFC. Clementi caught Shonie in a few good submissions but Shonie with Matts instructions always made his way out. Shonie got the nod on the decision and is the first guy in the semi-finals.

Confederate Motorcycle
f131_hellcat (22k image) I was cruising around on Uncrate.com when I found the Confederate F131 Hellcat. Its a really intruiging motorcycle with design elements that look chopper like but parts that are super bike in design. Its a top notch bike and it better be as it costs close to 70K.

The Gracie Jiu Jitsu World Championship 2006
The Gracie Jiu Jitsu World Championship 2006 is coming to El Camino College this weekend and I am really looking forward to it. I have a quincenyera on Saturday so I will miss the mens white and purple belts, women and childrens division but Im all set for Sunday which has the blue, brown and black belt men's divisions. There are a couple of guys from my gym competing so Im really looking forward to it, hey maybe next year I'll be skinny and experienced enough to compete myself.

Speaking of tournaments my gym is having an in-house tournament we are affectionatley referring to as the "Vacuum Cup" where the loser, Its like a regular elimination tournament but in reverse has to clean the gym. If you wina match your out of the tournament and the last guy who hasnt won a match is the guy who gets to clean. Hopefully it wont be me though it probably is between me and a couple of the other rookies.

Ipod Vending Machines
zoom_vending (47k image)

Bought a set of headphones form one of these vending machines last night, my daughters had "misplaced" mine. Pretty cool little machine allthough I wonder how many people would buy expensive items from a vending machine. Other than me of course...

The machine is the concept of Zone Systems and the experience is a lot like shopping on line but with instant gratification.

Got my first stripe!
Well I made my first milestone in Jiu Jitsu as I got my first stripe last night. I was surprised to be honest but honored all the same. I have finaaly got my training down to a set schedule for the most part. I am still working on my cardio though it has improved a lot over the last few weeks that I have been going steadily. I train with Pedro Sorriano in San Pedro who is a brown belt who started teaching at Paulo Guillobel's gym that was in San Pedro. I have also started using Jean Jacques Machado's website to get a better idea of the techniques we are learning since they are easier for me to see and abserve on line. Probably because my bl;ind self takes his glasses off when he is training.

Robotic Parking
I was reading today about the huge fiasco that an automated garage turned into in Hoboken New Jersey when the city failed to keep good on its software payments on its automated garage and the software turned itself off, he he when the license was expired. People had there cars trapped in the garage for weeks while the city and the vendor battled in court for a solution. I understand the practicality of an automated garage but have a little trouble with the old trust factor here.

Nutrisystem - A Bust?
Now I dont want to sound like I am being to hard or came into it with the wrong expectations but I am no really pleased with Nutri-System. They advertise the for $300 you get an entire months of already measured out food so that comparing that to what you spend on food a month you could easily save money. However when you get the months worth of food, which I might add is a pain to store, you find out the you need to provide your own fruits, dairy, vegetables, salads. All of which, minus the salads need to be measured out. Maybe I expected too much but I canceled the renewal. After all for the little bit I dont have to measure out I could just do the little bit of extra work I was saving by not measuring and save the $300.

Chinatown Art expedition
img044 (103k image)

Had to take some friends downtown the other day and managed to find my way over to chinatown. Turned into a pretty cool day. I found a place called Munky King where they sell cool artsy stuff. Also some artsy graffitti and wandered around enjoying myself. Didnt get to the x-games but hey there is always next year.

My Computer Problems
Well I finally bought my new computer today as my old one was fried in a lightning storm. I went to Office Depot with every intention of buying another e-machine but ended uo walking away with a compaq presario, medi center, with a gig of ram, and lightscribe dvd burner for the same money. Im still trying to see if I can salvage my old files, Im guessing I can and atleast I have most in a backup from May though I'd still be missing tons of music if I cant. I like the new computer and hope this one lasts a while!

Jiu Jitsu Lifestyle - Arte Suave
Hey had the chance to watch this tape the other day and it is fascinating because it not only looks at the great jiu jitsu gyms of Brazil and the champions but also what they do as far as training. One of the gyms is right off the water and overlooks a beautiful bay. Another was awesome in that it has a pipe and rope maze on the roof that the guys are expected to maneuver around arm to arm to build up there strength. There was also a section on the dvd about gimnastica natural which is kind of a free form exercise that is great for training BJJ. I tried to find out more but havent had much luck finding info on it. It was a great video, still want to watch the second edition even though I hear its not as good as the first.

Speaking of the old jiu jitsu lifestyle I think I finally have my three sessiona weeek routine down now. I am finally stating to get a lil stamina up for training and am having a blast.
