Blackberry Curve
blackberry_curve_pearl (56k image)

You know it always happens to me. I buy a new toy and then almost immediately something better comes out. Like when I bought my 60gb iPod video they announce the 80gb model for the same price. Yes I know I ended up getting the 80gb model anyways but it gets a little frustrating. Today I found out that 2 months after getting a Blackberry Pearl that they are coming out with the Blackberry Curve. Now I was not that bothered by the 8700 model that came out recently even though it had built in gps services, I have to use an external gps for the pearl, as it didnt have a camera and was quite a bigger. Now the Curve doesn't appear to have the gps function either but it comes at a much smaller size, though not as small as the pearl, a 2mp camera, stero bluetooth, better media capability and software. I'll have to go check it out and let you know what the verdict was.

Sherdog on ESPN
I was really pleased to hear when Sherdog.com was joining forces with ESPN to provide MMA content. All of the guys at Sherdog do a top notch job and have worked hard for the recogniyion they have garnered. From being denied predd passes to being harassed for filming weigh in events they have gone through tons to provide solid mma content and hopefully the days of being denied press passes are behind them. I mean hey if they are good enough for ESPN shouldn't they be good enough for the UFC?

After I had written my last post I was checking out Stanfords website and saw they have their own Stanford on iTunes U page with tons of information. The material there is awesome you can download class lectures etc. I downloaded a class on the historical Jesus which is awesome. Its a great opportunity to learn from some great professors at a great institution.

The scare of my life
Yesterday was a normal Sunday until my brother in law called to tell me he had been in a car accident. He was calm on the phone so I didnt panic but I rushed over to the scene to see if I could help. The scene was terrifying as their car was up on the sidewalk, another car was in the middles of the intersection, there were three fire trucks, three paramedic rigs, and multiple police cars on the scene. I asked the officer where my family was and he said on the way to Harbor General which is our nearest trauma center which really got me worrying. I took off immediately and managed to catch up with the riggs as they were getting off the freeway and saw them as they were being taken out of the ambulance. Luckile the kids were fine. My brother in law was in pain but had nothing serious but it makes you really appreciate the ones you love and not to take your time with them for granted. Anyone who knows me knows my niece and nephew are like my own kids to me...

Well the season is finally reaching the point where things are getting interesting. The teams are on their third and final sets of dual meets and the playoff picture is suddenly getting clearer. Last Night Quad Cities faced off against the Chicago Red Vears in what had severe implications on the playoff picture. Quad Cities won by a 3-2 margin to keep themselves in contention at (2-1) 9-6 but not in a solid enough position to gurantee they are in. The Condors found themselves in the same predicament winning 3-2 over the San Jose Razorclaws but with a final record of (2-1) 8-7 not in great position to move on. The Red Bears and Razorclaws were both already out of contention and finished the season at 0-3 (4-11).

Now fore the interesting part on June 1st in Everett, WA the Tokyo Sabres meet the Portland Wolfpack. Tokyo has been a surprise this season winning both of their duals to get to a 2-0 (6-4) record taking victories over the Scorpions and the Condors. If they can pull of the win they are in the playoffs by nature of their 3-0 record. Portland on the other hand is in a perilous situation, at 1-1 (5-5) they would need a sweep to be in a solid position after last seasons number 2 finish. On the other side of the card the Los Angeles Anacondas 2-0 (8-2) take on the Seattle Tiger Sharks 1-1 (6-4). This matchup will play big on the final seedings. Anything barring a sweep by Seattle and the Anacondas are into the playoffs. The Tiger Sharks despit their strong record need a win to get in since there are already 5 teams with 2 wins or more.

Then in the final regular season matchups on June 16 in Las Vegas the Toronto Dragons 1-1 (6-4) take on the New York Pitbulls 2-0 (7-3). Again the Dragons need a win to get in but the Pit Bulls also ned a solid performance to get through though they are sitting nicely in second place but couldnt take more than a 3-2 defeat and make it. On the other half of the card is a battle for Pride most likey as the Nevada Lions 1-1 (4-6) take on the Tuscon Scorpions 0-2 (3-7). Now the Lions could be considered at the least a dark horse if they took a decisive victory, 5-0 more likely, to jump way up into the playoffs.

I'm guessing the Wolfpack will defeat the Sabres 3-2, and the Anacondas will defeat the Tiger Sharks 3-2 as well which would leave the Anacondas in at 3-0 (11-4) Wolfpack on the bubble 2-1 (8-7) Sabres on the bubble at 2-1 (8-7) and Tiger Sharks out 1-2 (8-7). I think the Pitbulls will defeat the Dragons 3-2 which will leave the Pitbulls in at 3-0 (10-5) and the Dragons out at 1-2 (8-7). I also think the Lions will win 3-2 over the scorpions which would leave them out at 2-1 (7-8) with the Scorpions 0-3 (5-10).

Since I couldnt find any tiebreaker procedure for the IFL lets assume that since the condors lost to the Sabres that they are out of the running. So now its the Sabres and the Wolfpack if the Wolfpack by nature of their 3-2 victory over the Sabres would be in.

Well this year was the first in quite a few that I didnt get to go to the weanie roast. My buddy who I normally go with was in Vegas this weekend. Anyways as is tradition I caught what I could on the webcast. I got to see the Silversun Pickups set from the side stage in the afternoon and then didnt get too see anything til Bad Religion was on. Bad Religion had a great set as did Queens of the Stone Age who have an album coming out called Era Vulgaris coming out soon. Interpol whose album I am really looking forward to on July 10th played a great set. The Killer's pulled out of the show but they got Incubus to do a last minute fill in. Well not all of Incubus bur Brandon and the guitar player and it was amazing to see what a great set they played with just the two of them. Social Distortion was on next, they are releasing a greatest hit album on June 26th, There sound was a little mellower with the addition of a piano but they are still a strong performer but I wasnt as impressed this time around. Korn was up next and though they are still great they arent the same without Head. They have added a strange cast of characters to complete the team but they were without Head and David and it just wasnt the same. Linkin Park completed the bill and they were awesome. They played a wide variety of their three albums amd were awesome!

Halo 3 Beta
As I am sure you all know I am a huge Halo fan. I bought my first xbox so I could play Halo Combat Evolved. My friends and I would get together and play at Halo parties. When Halo 2 came out I was on light in a flash. Now that Halo 3 was coming around the corner I made sure to preorder crackdown so I would get first dibs at playing the Halo 3 Beta and now that it is out I was not disappointed. The gameplay is nice logical step as it is more advanced than previous versions but not such a huge jump that there is any real learning curve. The way you dual wield is a little different but nothing huge. The graphics are great and though I thought it would be a stretch since Halo 2 is the best online game ever Halo 3 looks to advance the online experience as well. I am now really looking forward to the full release. It is awesome if you have a chance check it out.

Becoming a Believer
Yeah I know a lot of people have their opinions about the LA Galaxy and their signing of David Beckham and I wasnt sure what difference it would really make. It was definitely a sign the league was serious about moving in another direction but since I was fan of the NASL I got worried they might be heading down the same path. Then I found out that the Galaxy has signed Abel Xavier former portugese national team defender and recently with premier league team Middlesbrough who will be a great anchor for their defense. So now not only does the Galaxy have an international quality midfielder they also have an international quality defender so I imagine while they seem to be suffering now things definitely seem to be looking up for them this year.

Also came with the bag you see there. Ive been trying to learn the game but its definitely going to be a while before I'll be comfortable on a course.

My new GPS System
gsat (11k image)

I have been wanting to get a GPS system for quite some time now. Unfortunately they arent inexpensive. Since I got my Blackberry Pearl a few months back I found out I could get a bluetooth GPS sensor and use it for directions. Today I bought my GSAT and I have to admit its a strong case of love at first use. The devise itslef sells $99 amd I got mine at Cingular just to avoid any compatability concerns. The software service Cingular uses is Telenav and for unlimited use it costs $10 a month. As soon as I had signed up for the service I got an email to download the software. I charged the device and after installing the software over the air paired thedevice to the phone and I was off to the races. It was that easy.

Fallout from De La Hoya Mayweather
Well I tried to keep an open mind going into Saturday's fight because it really is the only big boxing bout that would grab the worlds attention. That said let me precursor that I am about to go on a rant as a MMA fan first and foremost but unlike many of my counterparts I like Boxing I just like MMA better. The fight was 12 rounds of mostly taking a pot shot and running. Sure it was a real skillfull fight by Mayweather's part but it was boring. Not once did I worry that Mayweather had De La Hoya in trouble. Is the best that boxing can put together? Sorry but I would rather only have to deal with this crap for three rounds and get the decision then. MMA has an advantage in that guys have three rounds to decide a contest and so they tend to go at it harder. All in all it was a fun night but I will stick with my MMA and while I'm not against boxing I wont be getting any pay per views soon. In other news IBF champion Kermit Cintron has decided to step up and offered to take the challenge UFC president put out to Floyd Mayweather. Cintron might actually make a more interesting challenge though because while a world champion boxer he was also offered some ncaa wrestling scholarships he had to bail on due to a knee injury. So while I was pretty certain that Sherk would be tough on Mayweather assuming he could duck the punch take him down and ground and pound him Cintron could use a Chuck Liddell tactic and sprawl and then stand back up and deliver his crushing punishment...

Calloway XJ Golf Club set
Calloway_set (22k image)

I have been fooling around with the idea of buying my own golf clubs because I would like to take up the game a little more seriously but figure borrowing friends clubs isnt going to be good for me developing my own game and such. But on the other hand clubs are expensive. Now obviously Id like to get the best clubs I can without spending a lot of money, so I was checking out the Calloway Golf website and noticed they only sell one set of clubs...a junior set. Now I know you must be laughing to yourself but I am 5'5" tall and the clubs are actually probably a better size for me than adult clubs. That said for $240 I get a bag, a driver, fairway driver, 3 irons, a sandwedge, and a putter. I started pricing the clubs and found a comprable driver is $300 alone add in a putter at $170 and the bargain seems even better.

my smartphones
You know I am one of the lucky or depending on how you look at unlucky people to own two smartphones. I have a blackberry pearl as my personal phone and a treo 700w for my work phone so I am always connected. Did I mention I am manic enough to carry around my laptop as well which has a verizon wireless modem as well. What excuse can I give? None really I like the pearl and I can take care of all my personal stuff on it like this blog entry and keeping track of my email. The treo takes care of the same needs for work and if only it was practical for remote access I would leave my laptop at work. The phones are both awesome in their own right though probably more so as I use them.

Another San Pedro Redevelopment Project
This one sounds really unique but I have to have my doubts it will ever happen. A local businessman is proposing that the city close Pacific Avenue to vehicle traffic, wide the sidewalks for seating areas and build a creek down the middle. Now at first the impact on traffic sounds like it might be huge but in reality it would push all traffic east of Pacific down to Harbor Blvd and all traffic west of the project up to Gaffey which is probably pretty close to the existing traffic pattern. It'd create an outdoor mall and gathering place in old downtown San Pedro that would be much more pleasant than Pacific Ave. This is on top of other upgrades to San Pedro including the waterfront project, new residential construction including the bank lofts, centre street lofts, the vue, and possibly Ponte Vista. San Pedro really is changing dramatically and I like the direction it is traveling maintaining it's uniques personailty while moving ahead.

Update

As I was investigating around i.e. surfing the web I found out there is another huge 18 story tower project called Palos Verdes Urban Village going in right next door to the vue. The thing is when I say right next door I mean right in between it and the Vue View of the port. In my humble opinion this is a hit directly to the value of the Vue project which is only 16 stories and now wont be able to see the bridge based on the location of both buildings. I wonder if Vue has been telling anyone of the other project funny I didnt see any mention of it on its website. actuall it is platered all over the page I remembered showing the views in small print. Also over near Ponte Vista there is a third building going in called Seaport Homes which is also going to add to the congestion that the folks on the RPV side are concerned about.

Starbucks is luring me in again
I had finally found a way to escape the grasp of Starbucks, mainly because you cant get breakfast there there. Well apparently they paid some mind readers and found out because they have been introducing breakfast sandwiches at select locations. The four sandwiches are Black Forest Ham and Egg and Cheddar, Eggs Florentine with Baby Spinach and Havarti, Peppered Egg Bacon and Cheddar, and Sausage Egg and Cheddar. Sound really good and they are getting good reviews in the blogiverse. They all set around 400 calories which makes them comprable to other breakfast options at Starbucks. Now if only they would start offering fresh made sandwiches for lunch Id be ble to do all my eating there. Coffee is good for me....Precious?

KEOQ Weanie Roast and Fiesta 2007
Im really looking forward to this show this year. The lineup is Linkin Park, The Killers, Social Distortion, Korn, Interpol, Bad Religion, Queens of the Stone Age, Rise Against, 30 seconds to Mars, Tim Armstrong, The Bravery, Peter Bjorn and John, Siversun Pickups, Tiger Army, and Plain White T's. This show will be awesome. Not to mention I really like Irvine Meadows as a venue. Had a blast last couple years at this show and I'm guessing this year wont be much different except that I am actually considering bringing my kids along.

Verisign to offer one time use passwords on credit cards
incard-displaycard (8k image) Saw this on engadget and this really sounds like a step in the right direction as far as providing security for on-line purchases. If you're not familiar with one time passwords basically its a digital number that changes each time you use it and hopefully periodically as well, so thieves would have to have the actual card to rob you blind. Of course it might make you think twice about using that card to pry back into your locked apartment but hey....
