01/08/2006: "State of the UFC"
Well I was cruising around the UFC website to see what was coming up and damn I almost miss the good old days when a pay per view happened every three months.
On January 16th the UFC has another Ultimate Fight Night which is headlined by Tim Sylvia versus Assuerio Silva. I havent seen Silva before but looking him up on SHerdog hes definitely a tough character who should make things tough for Sylvia. In the other matchups Stephan Bonnar takes on James Irvin who is well known for his last appearance in the UFC when he brutally knocked out Terry Martin with a flying knee. Spencer Fisher is set to take on Aaron Riley. Drew Fickett takes on Josh Burkman in what should be a huge fight for Burkman as Fickett is a vrey dangerous fighter. I have to wonder if the UFC isnt throwing their TUF fighters to the wolves quicker after all of the public complaints about the show's fighters getting preferential treatment. Chris Leben will have a dangerous opponent in Jorge Rivera in what is sure to be a standup war. Alex Karalexis from TUF 1 will take on Jason Von Flue from TUF 2 in a welterweight matchup that I wonder why its happening but hey maybe they had a slot to fill. In what should be a war Jonathan Goulet takes on Duane Ludwig. In the final matchup Melvin Guillard takes on Josh Neer. This card has both strong and weak matches on the card but easily could ppv quality.
On February 4th in the next pay per view, UFC 57 we get Liddell vrs. Couture III, which the UFC is charging more for since it thinks it can. Frank Mir also returns to take on Marcio Cruz in what should be a pretty strong ground fight. Renato Sobral the up and coming light heavyweight returns to take on the very tough Mike Van Arsdale. Alessio Sakara takes on Elvis Sinosic in what I imagine the UFC looks as a buildup match for Sakara. In heavyweight action Brandon Vera takes Justin Eilers, Paul Buentello takes on Gilbert Aldana, and Jeff Monson takes on Brandon Lee Hinkle. In what should be a very interesting matchup for both Nick Diaz takes on Joe Riggs in what should definitely be a finesse versus power matchup. In the final match on the card Keith Jardine takes on Mike Whitehead in what will be a matchup of what many folks believe probably should have been the heavyweight final of TUF 2.
Now on to March 4th and UFC 58 and why I am so damn excited. There are only two fights on the card and they are both whoppers as Rich Franklin takes on David Loiseau in what should be a great middleweight title bout and George St Pierre takes on BJ Penn in welterweight action. Already I know Im buying this card. GSP versus BJ Penn ought to be a good candidate for fight of the year on paper at least. GSP arguably behind Ninja Rua in prode was fighter of the year and BJ is one of the top dogs at middleweight and the only guy to take out Matt Hughes in recent history. Franklin versus Loiseau ought to be a barn burner as well as both these guys love to slug it out.
